Acupuncture provides very serious pain relief for headache sufferers. For one thing, Acupuncture has been shown to prompt the release of opioid peptides (such as endorphins) in the brain. Opioid peptides produce a similar analgesic effect as many prescription painkillers—including morphine—except that they are naturally produced by the brain.
Additionally, studies support the fact that many people living with chronic headaches have neurotransmitter imbalances in the brain (neurotransmitters are the brain’s chemical messengers). Migraineurs, for example, are known to have low levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for mood and the transmission of pain signals. Acupuncture affects several important neurotransmitters, including—but not limited to—serotonin.
