With U.S. life expectancy at an unprecedented 77.9 years, the overall health of the nation continues to improve in every area except one—pain. The Centers for Disease Control reports that pain is the one health issue that is on the rise as other concerns decrease.

The number one pain-related complaint is back pain. Sea Girt Spine and Rehabilitation is dedicated to providing hands-on, multi-disciplinary care for back pain. Our system of rehabilitation includes chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture (for pain relief), and massage therapy.

Back pain is a nearly ubiquitous problem. Very generally, back pain is usually the result of age-related degeneration and/or  trauma affecting any of the components of the back, including the spinal discs or muscles. Trauma can occur over time due to poor posture or  may be the result of a sudden impact (such as during a car crash).

The back is responsible for a number of important tasks, all of which are compromised when injury, illness, or age cause pain and other symptoms. First, the back must support the head and the trunk of the body. The back is also a flexible structure that allows for movement. The back’s most vital job, however, is to protect the spinal cord.

When any condition affects the normal curvature of the spine, the spinal cord (and the rest of the central nervous system) is left vulnerable. This is why patients with back pain and neck pain often complain of headaches, fatigue, poor immunity, and general disorder within the body. Physical therapy and chiropractic care, therefore, not only address the specific problem causing back pain, but also the health of the entire spine. This type of care ensures better overall health, reduced pain, and restored movement and flexibility.

Physical Therapy for Back Pain

Therapeutic exercise is a key component in building strength, increasing movement and flexibility, reducing pain, and promoting the healing process. Physical therapy for back pain also includes deep tissue massage, ultrasound, electrotherapy, and heat and ice. Massage releases tension, while ultrasound and electrotherapy speed up the healing process to reduce pain and inflammation and prevent the formation of scar tissue.

Spinal traction is a technique that works to provide stabilization to affected areas of the back in order to relieve the pressure on spinal nerves (and therefore ease pain). For back pain related to disc injuries, traction can help to resolve the condition by creating a vacuum-like effect (caused by the gentle separation of the vertebrae) in which bulged or herniated disc material is pulled back into its correct position.
