Relieve pain and improve movement with physical therapy.
Physical therapy is an important component in Sea Girt Spine and Rehabilitation’s program of care for neck pain, whiplash, and other conditions affecting the cervical spine. Our office also provides chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy for neck pain.
The spine was designed to curve in a very specific way; this curvature provides stability and bears the weight of the head and upper body. In the neck, this is known as the cervical spine, and should have a 40 to 60 degree curve. Whether this curvature is pushed forward (cervical lordosis) or reversed (cervical kyphosis), the result is the same: exponentially increased load-bearing, pain, reduced movement, and disorder within the body’s nervous system.
A cervical spine that is aligned properly supports the correct functioning of the nervous system. Neck pain is the body’s way of signaling that something has gone awry in the cervical spine—it is a call to action for the body to ensure that pain and dysfunction does not continue. In some cases, patients suffer for years from headaches, fatigue, and other general health issues before visiting a chiropractic office. Even a minor auto accident can have a negative affect on the soft tissues of the neck and lead to long-term, disastrous consequences.
One major consequence of cervical spine misalignment is arthritis, a condition in which the bones of the spine are eventually forced to remodel in order to accommodate the incorrect bearing of the weight of the head.
As previously mentioned, the trauma of an auto accident can cause neck pain by inflicting damage on the soft tissues of the neck. Sports injuries are another way that many people incur injury in the neck. Disc injuries and whiplash are two of the most common conditions caused by a sudden, abrupt injury. Trauma may also occur over time as the result of long-term problems with posture. Sitting incorrectly at a workstation, for example, can be the start of a number of neck-pain related conditions.
Age-related degeneration is another way that the neck may be subjected to various conditions that cause pain, including osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease. Younger patients who are obese or overweight may also suffer from neck pain due to an imbalance in the spine caused by weak abdominal muscles.
Physical Therapy and Neck Pain
Chiropractic care for neck pain is an obvious choice; this type of care directly addresses alignment issues within the cervical spine. At Sea Girt Spine and Rehabilitation, physical therapy is used in conjunction with chiropractic in order to increase the strength of the muscles, improve posture, relieve pain, and improve movement of the neck.
Sea Girt Spine and Rehabilitation center provides customized programs of therapeutic exercise as well as hands-on techniques (including deep tissue massage). Deep tissue massage eases tension in the muscles and tissues of the neck and prepares the cervical spine for physical therapy and chiropractic adjustment.
Our office also incorporates cervical traction in order to reduce pain and stabilize the spine. Additionally, we offer ultrasound technology, electrical muscle stimulation, and ice and heat therapies; these passive therapies encourage healing while reducing inflammation and scar tissue formation.
